A Liverpool teammate reportedly pushed Mo Salah “over the edge,” triggering the explosive outburst that has dominated headlines.
The biggest story in football right now centres on Mohamed Salah and the growing uncertainty around his Liverpool future after his explosive recent comments. The Egyptian openly criticised his detractors and questioned Arne Slot’s leadership, triggering a massive reaction from fans, pundits, and even his own teammates.
Salah didn’t feature in Liverpool’s 3–3 draw with Leeds United, yet after the match he claimed he had “no relationship” with Slot and accused the club of “throwing him under the bus.” Jamie Carragher slammed the outburst as “a disgrace,” though Steven Gerrard earned praise for responding more calmly. Regardless of opinion, Salah’s interview has dominated headlines and created major tension inside the club.
A surprising twist emerged when a report suggested that Salah’s anger may actually be directed at a teammate. According to Sport Bild, the winger has been left furious over what he sees as special treatment for new signing Florian Wirtz. Liverpool paid a Premier League-record £116m for the German midfielder (later topped by the £125m spent on Alexander Isak), and Bild journalist Axel Hesse claims Slot now views Wirtz as the centrepiece of his attack — leaving Salah feeling pushed aside.
Hesse added that Liverpool have long accepted Salah’s strong personality as long as he delivered goals, like last season when he scored 29 to fire the club to the league title. But with his recent dip in form, the club’s support has reportedly cooled. Not realising this shift, Salah allegedly lashed out after being benched for three straight games, paying little attention to the criticism directed at Wirtz or Slot.
The report claims that Wirtz being positioned as the new focal point — signalling a future without Salah — is what drove the Egyptian into “a rage,” even making him “an enemy within his own dressing room.” According to the publication, Liverpool should move him on quickly to restore unity at the club.
Ironically, Wirtz has struggled since arriving in England. He has yet to score in any of his first 20 appearances and has provided just one Premier League assist. Salah, by comparison, has five goals and three assists this season. That contrast may explain some of his frustration, although Wirtz hasn’t escaped criticism and hasn’t always been a guaranteed starter either, with five appearances coming from the bench.
Still, the German has featured in every league and Champions League match he’s been available for and has started the last four — during which Salah has been dropped. Salah was left out of the Inter Milan win, didn’t feature against West Ham or Leeds, and only played one half against Sunderland.
While Salah may be unhappy, blaming Wirtz for the situation seems harsh. At the same time, the £166m midfielder’s arrival always hinted at a generational shift — a shift that naturally places less reliance on the 33-year-old Egyptian superstar.
