Liverpool Star Accused of Triggering Mo Salah’s Furious Reaction Before His Explosive Interview

The biggest talking point in football right now centres on Mohamed Salah and the uncertainty surrounding his Liverpool future following his explosive recent comments. The Egyptian star openly challenged his critics and questioned manager Arne Slot, triggering strong reactions from teammates, pundits, and supporters.

After Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Leeds United — a match he didn’t feature in — Salah claimed he had “no relationship” with Slot and accused the club of having “thrown [him] under the bus.” Jamie Carragher slammed the remarks as “a disgrace,” though Steven Gerrard drew praise for offering a calmer response. Regardless of opinion, the fallout from Salah’s interview has dominated discussion around Liverpool. Now, a surprising report suggests the source of his anger may be one of his own teammates.

Report: Florian Wirtz Blamed for Salah’s Frustration

German outlet Sport Bild reports that Salah has been driven “into a rage” by what he perceives as favouritism toward Florian Wirtz. Liverpool paid a then-record £116 million for the midfielder (later surpassed by the £125 million spent on Alexander Isak).

According to journalist Axel Hesse, the size of that transfer has made Slot view Wirtz as the new focal point of Liverpool’s attack, leaving Salah feeling pushed aside. Hesse explained that the club long tolerated Salah’s strong personality because of his goal output — such as last season, when he scored 29 league goals to fire Liverpool to the title. But the support was always expected to fade if the goals dried up.

Salah, however, allegedly didn’t expect this shift. After being benched three consecutive games, he lashed out. Hesse added: “He didn’t think about his teammates. Publicly, he remained silent while new signing Wirtz and Slot were being criticised.

“The idea that Wirtz now leads the attack — marking the start of a future without Salah — is what enraged him. He’s become the enemy of his own dressing room. But not for much longer. Liverpool must sell Salah immediately for the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ spirit to return.”

Both Players Have Struggled in 2025/26

Wirtz hasn’t had an ideal start to his Liverpool career, failing to score in any of his 20 appearances and managing just one assist in 14 league games. Salah, on the other hand, has recorded five goals and three assists from 19 matches, including four goals and two assists in the Premier League.

While this may add context to Salah’s frustration, Wirtz has hardly escaped criticism himself. He also hasn’t been an automatic starter, with five appearances coming from the bench. Still, he has played in every league and Champions League game he’s been available for and started the last four — during which Salah has been left out.

Salah did not feature in the win over Inter Milan and was unused against West Ham and Leeds. His only recent minutes came as a substitute against Sunderland.

If Salah is unhappy, blaming Wirtz seems harsh. But his signing was always likely to signal a shift toward a post-Salah era at Anfield, especially with the Egyptian now 33.
