Liverpool Player Harshly Criticised After Victory Against Inter Milan
Liverpool fans have reached a firm verdict on Alexander Isak after the Reds’ narrow 1-0 Champions League victory over Inter.
With Mohamed Salah absent, Liverpool travelled to the San Siro for what turned out to be a dull contest in Milan. As has been the case throughout the campaign, Arne Slot’s men once again struggled to turn chances into goals.
Ibrahima Konaté thought he had opened the scoring in the first half, but his effort was disallowed after Virgil van Dijk’s header struck Hugo Ekitike’s arm in the build-up. And although Isak and Ekitike both started up front, neither managed to influence the game, with fans directing most of their frustration at the Swedish striker online.
Isak’s British-record £125 million transfer from Newcastle generated huge anticipation among supporters, yet he has fallen short of expectations. In 14 appearances, he has produced only two goals and one assist, with his last strike coming in the 2-0 win at West Ham on November 30.
He delivered another flat display on Tuesday night before being substituted in the 68th minute for Florian Wirtz, who went on to win a controversial late penalty after Felix Zwayer deemed Alessandro Bastoni’s challenge worthy of a spot-kick. Dominik Szoboszlai converted from 12 yards, lifting Liverpool to eighth in the 36-team league phase after six fixtures.
Still, fans were unforgiving in their assessment of Isak’s performance.
One supporter wrote: “I hope Isak eventually delivers, but right now he looks like an expensive error. We needed a right winger, not another No. 9. CB, CM, RW were all bigger priorities!”
Another said: “It’s been long enough — Isak is awful. Honestly the worst striker I’ve ever seen here.”
A third questioned: “Why did we spend so much on Isak? He’s a flop.”
A fourth added: “Isak is worth £40m at best. Newcastle make any £40–60m striker look like a £120m player.”
A fifth commented: “Isak has been the poorest big-name striker signing I’ve seen — and even worse, he’s been completely outshone by Ekitike, who has been brilliant.”
Liverpool now turn their attention to Saturday’s Premier League clash at home to Brighton.
