Caoimhin Kelleher has opened up about his choice to leave Liverpool, revealing the personal and professional reasons behind his departure from the club he called home for a decade.

 

Speaking on Ben Foster’s podcast, the Irish goalkeeper admitted that although the decision was tough, it felt like the right moment to seek regular first-team football. Kelleher joined Liverpool from Ringmahon Rangers at age 16 and spent all his developmental and senior years with the Reds.

 

“I was there for 10 years—joined at 16 in the Academy and worked my way up, spending around five years with the first team,” he said.

 

The 27-year-old never went out on loan, meaning every minute of his growth came at Liverpool, mostly serving as the reliable No.2 behind Alisson.

 

Despite strong relationships within the club, Kelleher said the need to play consistently ultimately pushed him toward a move.

 

“Being a No.2 is tough; you play a handful of games and have to perform. It worked out well for me at Liverpool, but I needed more,” he admitted.

 

Kelleher’s professionalism was reflected in his 67 appearances, 24 clean sheets, and standout displays in cup competitions—especially in penalty shoot-outs.

 

He also acknowledged the pressure surrounding his exit:

 

“There was a bit of media noise. When you come in and play well, people immediately say you should be playing first-team football. But the frustrating part was people thinking it’s simple for me to just leave,” he explained.

 

His move came at a time when Liverpool were planning long-term, highlighted by the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili, reinforcing the need for him to pursue a starting role elsewhere.
