Arne Slot Warned His Time Is Running Out Following PSV Hammering
Arne Slot has now been given a clear warning over how long he has left as Liverpool manager, following another disastrous showing in Wednesday night’s 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven.
The Reds’ slump has deepened dramatically — nine losses in their last 12 matches across all competitions, and at least three goals conceded in each of their last three games. The PSV humiliation even sparked an explosive post-match interview from Curtis Jones.
Ivan Perisic put PSV ahead from the spot after Virgil van Dijk conceded his third penalty of the season, before Dominik Szoboszlai equalised ten minutes later. But second-half strikes from Guus Til and a brace from Couhab Driouech condemned the Premier League champions to another heavy Anfield defeat.
Slot, who took Liverpool to a league title in April but has since overseen a dramatic collapse despite spending £450 million on new signings, is now under immense pressure.
With growing doubts about Slot’s ability to reverse the slide, club legend Jamie Carragher insists this coming week will decide his future. Writing in The Telegraph, Carragher said Slot should be removed from his position if he fails to collect at least seven points from matches against West Ham, Sunderland, and Leeds — especially after repeatedly selecting the error-prone Ibrahima Konate.
Carragher wrote:
“Arne Slot has one week to save his job. Anything short of seven points will make an already unacceptable situation unsustainable.”
He added that despite the manager’s goodwill, Liverpool cannot continue with the standards seen in the past three months. The upcoming fixtures offer Slot the perfect chance to restore trust, but if results worsen, the club may be forced to find a replacement.
Slot’s contract runs until 2027, and Liverpool would likely owe around £10 million in compensation if they decide to dismiss him. Despite the pressure, a Mail Sport report by Lewis Steele claims the board still backs Slot, with both club sources and the 47-year-old himself insisting he has support.
Speaking after the PSV defeat, Slot said:
“I’m fine. I have a lot of support from above. Of course, it would be nice to turn things around and get a win, but when results are poor, questions are normal. I’m OK with my position — I’ve been in difficult situations before. It’s time to turn it around.”
Liverpool, currently 12th in the Premier League, travel to face West Ham on Sunday at 2:05pm.
