Gabriel Jesus broke two unwanted records as Arsenal thrashed Crystal Palace to revive their Premier League title challenge.
Jesus, making just his third Premier League start of the season after scoring a hat-trick in the Carabao Cup win over Palace, found the net early, giving the Gunners a 1-0 lead after just six minutes. This goal marked his first in the league in 24 matches, a remarkable dry spell dating back to January. It was also Arsenal’s first league goal from open play in three games, following a frustrating goalless draw with Everton the previous weekend.
Jesus quickly added a second in the 14th minute to restore Arsenal’s lead after Ismaila Sarr had equalized for Palace. He hit the post just before half-time, and Kai Havertz capitalized on the rebound to make it 3-1. Gabriel Martinelli added a fourth in the second half, and substitute Declan Rice sealed the win with a brilliant fifth goal, closing the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool ahead of their trip to Spurs.
Paul Merson praised the result on Sky Sports: “An outstanding result. To go to Crystal Palace and score five goals is fantastic.” Jamie Redknapp also highlighted Jesus’ importance: “It’s crucial he stays fit and continues scoring goals. If Arsenal bring in another player in January, great, but having Jesus available is key.”
However, not all news was positive for Arsenal, as Bukayo Saka was forced to leave the pitch in the first half after pulling up with a hamstring injury while attempting a cross. He immediately headed down the tunnel for treatment.
