‘The word coming out of Liverpool…’ – Reporter suggests how likely January transfers are at Anfield

Following an unprecedented summer spending spree, it’ll be fascinating to see how active Liverpool are in the January transfer window.

Despite splashing out nearly £450 million on new players between June and August, the reigning Premier League champions sit a disappointing eighth in the table after losing five of their opening 11 league games. Speculation about further signings has been rife — with reports from Spain claiming that Marc Guehi has already ‘given his word’ to join Liverpool in 2026, while teenage RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has also been linked in recent weeks.

Will Liverpool do business in January?
In a Liverpool Confidential Q&A for Mail Sport, journalist Lewis Steele addressed fan questions about potential January signings. He said current indications suggest it’s “more unlikely than likely” that FSG will make new additions — though that stance “could, and perhaps should, change.” While players such as Guehi and Antoine Semenyo have been mentioned as possible targets, no meaningful progress has been made toward any winter deals yet.

However, Steele argued that signing another defender is essential, particularly with Giovanni Leoni sidelined long-term. He warned that further injuries to Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konaté could turn “a bad season” into “a terrible one.”

Why defensive reinforcements make sense
FSG have rarely been pressured into mid-season spending — Liverpool’s last January signing was Cody Gakpo almost three years ago. Yet, as Steele notes, this window could be an ideal opportunity to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad before it’s too late.

With limited senior centre-backs available and uncertainty over whether Konaté will extend his contract beyond next summer, a new central defender should be a priority. Guehi remains the leading candidate, given Liverpool’s previous interest before Crystal Palace halted talks. If he’s unavailable, sporting director Richard Hughes must swiftly move to the next best option.

Liverpool have a history of seizing unexpected market opportunities, so it would be unwise to completely dismiss the idea of winter signings. While another major spending spree is improbable, one or two smart acquisitions could make all the difference between salvaging the season and seeing it slip away.
