Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for a highly rated winger in the January transfer window — but they’ll have to fend off strong competition from Juventus to secure his signature.
Arne Slot’s side have endured a rough start to their Premier League title defence. Following their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday, the Reds sit eighth in the table with six wins and five losses from their opening 11 games — eight points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
While Slot’s position remains safe for now — having guided Liverpool to the 2024/25 Premier League crown — the pressure is on after a record-breaking summer spend of £424 million on players such as Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi, Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Florian Wirtz. The Dutchman will be desperate for a turnaround after the international break.
Despite that heavy investment, Liverpool failed to land Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi, whose proposed transfer collapsed late in the summer window. The 25-year-old, now attracting interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, has refused a new contract at Palace and is expected to leave when his deal expires in 2026.
Whether Liverpool reignite their pursuit of Guehi in January is uncertain, but reports suggest the club will be active in the winter market. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are set to rival Juventus for Bayern Munich and Germany winger Serge Gnabry.
The 30-year-old, who began his career in England with Arsenal, left the Gunners in 2016 after a disappointing loan spell at West Bromwich Albion. Since joining Bayern in 2017, he’s become one of Europe’s top wide players, winning six Bundesliga titles and a Champions League among numerous honours.
Gnabry’s contract runs until June 2026, meaning he’ll be eligible to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs when he enters the final six months of his deal. He reportedly earns €362,885 (£320,824) per week, ranking as Bayern’s fourth-highest earner — a figure that would make him Liverpool’s third, behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
Speaking to CBS Sports in 2020, Gnabry admitted that Arsenal would be his “favourite” Premier League destination if he were ever to return to England. However, he’s previously been linked with Liverpool — particularly after Sadio Mané’s move to Bayern in 2022 — and could once again be on their radar as the Reds look to strengthen their attack.
