Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a top-tier winger in the January transfer window, but will face competition from Juventus for his signature.
Arne Slot’s side have struggled to start their Premier League title defence. Following a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday, the Reds sit eighth in the table, having won six and lost five of their opening 11 matches—eight points behind leaders Arsenal.
While Slot’s position appears secure after guiding Liverpool to the 2024/25 Premier League title, a summer spending spree of £424 million—on Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi, Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Florian Wirtz—has raised expectations that results should improve after the upcoming international break.
Despite these additions, Liverpool missed out on Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi, whose proposed transfer collapsed late in the summer window. The 25-year-old is also attracting interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. Bayern coach Oliver Glasner confirmed that Guehi will not renew his contract and will leave the club when it expires in 2026.
Liverpool’s January plans remain uncertain, but strengthening the squad is expected. Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the Reds will battle Juventus for Bayern Munich and Germany winger Serge Gnabry, who will be out of contract in June 2026.
Gnabry, 30, started his career in England with Arsenal before moving to Werder Bremen in 2016, following an unproductive loan at West Bromwich Albion. Since joining Bayern in 2017, he has developed into a key player, helping the club secure six Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Champions League among other honours. Capable of playing as a second striker, Gnabry could negotiate a pre-contract agreement with another club once he has six months left on his current deal.
According to Capology, the Germany international earns €362,885 (£320,824) per week, making him Bayern’s fourth-highest earner behind Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, and Joshua Kimmich—and Liverpool’s potential third-highest, behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
In a 2020 interview with CBS Sports, Gnabry spoke fondly of Arsenal, describing the Gunners as “the favourite” if he returned to the Premier League. The winger was also linked with Liverpool following Sadio Mane’s move to Bayern in 2022.
