Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa has reportedly declined a call-up to the Italy national team, according to manager Gennaro Gattuso.
Chiesa came off the bench in the 83rd minute during Liverpool’s 3–0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday — a move that left fans frustrated, as many believed he should’ve been introduced earlier.
Despite being used mostly as a substitute this season, the 27-year-old has already made more Premier League appearances and scored more goals than last campaign. His limited minutes haven’t gone unnoticed by Italy, as Gattuso still wanted him for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway.
However, speaking on Monday, Gattuso confirmed that Italy will have to cope without Chiesa, saying:
> “I often talk to him. We must respect everyone’s personal decisions. I know what he’s told me, and I can’t say more.”
When pressed on whether Chiesa chose not to join, Gattuso added:
> “Yes. This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve had to explain this.”
The reason behind his withdrawal remains unclear. While Chiesa has struggled with injuries in recent years, he’s been fit this season and could now use the international break to focus on training with Liverpool, who have lost five of their last six league games.
Still, despite reduced game time, Chiesa remains a fan favorite — recently winning Liverpool’s Player of the Month for September, an award decided by supporters.
He told Sky Sports last week:
> “The fans’ support pushes me to give more every time I play. I always try to give my best, and I think they see that.”
