“It wouldn’t surprise me” – Romano teases potential January exit for Liverpool player

Fabrizio Romano has shared new information regarding Federico Chiesa’s situation at Liverpool.

Chiesa made a bright start to the campaign, regularly influencing games when coming off the bench. Despite that, he has struggled to secure consistent minutes under Arne Slot.

The former Juventus star was strongly linked with an exit during the summer, but eventually chose to remain at Anfield and fight for his place. However, things haven’t gone as he hoped. Even though Slot values his contributions and attitude, that hasn’t resulted in regular playing time.

With Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo firmly ahead of him in the wide roles, Chiesa has continued to find opportunities limited—even during Liverpool’s recent poor spell.

If nothing changes, a January departure is possible. Romano revealed on his Here We Go podcast that he wouldn’t be shocked if Italian clubs attempt to sign Chiesa again in the winter window.

Romano explained:

“It’s been a strange start for Chiesa. At the beginning of summer, he was expected to leave, but the situation shifted multiple times with Slot and the club. Chiesa genuinely wants to finish the season at Liverpool and then decide what’s next. He wants to stay and battle for his position. But he needs to play. If that doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t be surprised if Italian clubs come back in January. For now, both Chiesa and Liverpool want to continue together, so any winter move won’t be simple.”

Chiesa’s future at Anfield still feels unsettled.

Although he wants to remain with the club, his stance could change if the lack of minutes continues. Chiesa is eager to play consistently to regain his place in Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy squad ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Slot hasn’t managed to integrate him into the team effectively, even during spells when others were struggling. While Chiesa has grown popular among fans due to his impact when he does play, the winger is frustrated with how his Liverpool spell has unfolded so far.
