Fabrizio Romano has hinted on social media that a new contract could be in the works for a Liverpool player.
On Thursday, Gregg Evans of The Athletic reported that “preliminary discussions” are ongoing with Liverpool regarding a potential new deal for Dominik Szoboszlai, although “club sources are downplaying that any agreement is imminent.” The Hungarian midfielder is currently tied to the Premier League champions until June 2028 and earns £120,000 per week.
Shortly after the report, a Liverpool fan page shared a brief summary of the story on X, crediting the journalist. Romano responded with just two emojis—a winking face and a film frame—leaving his exact meaning unclear, though the wink suggests he believes the story has some merit.
With one credible source reporting the news and Romano seemingly corroborating it, there’s a strong possibility that preliminary talks for Szoboszlai’s new contract are already underway.
While other Liverpool players face more urgent contract concerns—such as Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson, both with less than eight months left—this signals FSG’s intent to secure the long-term future of the Hungarian midfielder.
Szoboszlai impressed in Liverpool’s win over Real Madrid on Tuesday, with his free kick setting up Alexis Mac Allister’s winning goal, earning praise from captain Virgil van Dijk. Having witnessed the protracted contract saga of van Dijk and others last season, it seems Richard Hughes is keen to avoid similar drama with Szoboszlai by acting early, well before the 2028 expiry date.
