Darwin Nunez is already being linked with a quick return to the Premier League, despite only leaving Liverpool less than a year ago.
The striker departed Anfield after helping Arne Slot’s side secure a historic Premier League title, sealing a £46 million move to Al Hilal as one of the latest stars to join the Saudi Pro League.
Since arriving in Riyadh, the Uruguayan has featured eight times, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Although his contract with Al Hilal runs until 2028, rumours have started to emerge about a possible comeback to England — and a former Premier League star believes he should take that route.
World Cup winner Marcel Desailly, who made 222 appearances for Chelsea, has publicly backed Nunez to return to the Premier League and lead the attack for his former club. Chelsea have continued to struggle for a reliable No.9, despite signing Joao Pedro and Liam Delap in the summer, while Marc Guiu and Tyrique George are also options up front.
Speaking to OLGB, Desailly said Chelsea should be targeting Nunez.
> “For me, Nunez was the perfect choice. He had some tough luck at Liverpool, but they saw real potential in him. In Maresca’s system, with confidence, he could’ve been a great fit for Chelsea. He wouldn’t have been too expensive either. If Saudi isn’t working out for him, he could be the one to come back.”
Nunez arrived at Liverpool in 2022 for an initial £64 million and carried huge expectations, but he never fully became the consistent goal scorer the club hoped for. His best Premier League goal tally was 11 in the 2023/24 season. He scored five league goals last season before being sold, with Liverpool reinvesting in Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.
Currently, Al Hilal sit third in the Saudi Pro League with 17 points from seven matches, four points behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr.
