Liverpool are now seen as the leading contenders to land Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, with Real Madrid seemingly no longer in the race. The England international is nearing the end of his contract at Selhurst Park, making him available on a free transfer next summer.
According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool have remained confident of securing Guehi’s signature, despite failing to complete a deal in the summer. Not much has changed since then, as Spanish outlet AS reports that the Reds are still the favourites to sign him, even with other clubs monitoring the situation.
A move to Real Madrid now appears almost impossible due to Guehi’s wage demands, despite previous interest from the Spanish giants. While there could still be unexpected twists before a deal is finalised, Guehi is believed to be keen on joining Liverpool.
Liverpool were close to sealing the transfer in the summer before Palace pulled the plug late on, but it seems the 25-year-old may still get his desired move to Anfield.
AS also name Bayern Munich as a potential threat, meaning the German champions could still attempt to hijack the deal.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are now looking at other defensive options, including Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté, who is also entering the final months of his contract. It remains unclear if Liverpool can convince Konaté to sign a new deal, but if he does leave for free, bringing in another top-level free agent like Guehi would be shrewd business.
Konaté has been influential for the Reds, but Guehi has already proven his quality in the Premier League and could be a strong replacement should the Frenchman depart.
