Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed that three players will miss the Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Tuesday due to injury.
Earlier today, journalist Paul Joyce gave fans a mixed update from the squad’s training session in Kirkby. Curtis Jones was involved in training, but Alexander Isak was absent. Alisson Becker and Jeremie Frimpong also missed the weekend victory over Aston Villa, with Frimpong describing his injury layoff as “really annoying” on social media.
Speaking at his Monday press conference ahead of the Real Madrid game, Slot provided updates on the Swedish striker, Dutch right-back, and Brazilian goalkeeper.
“All three are unavailable for tomorrow,” Slot said (via liverpoolfc.com). “Jeremie and Alisson will also miss Sunday’s match against Manchester City. As for Alex, he won’t start on Sunday, but he might be involved in the squad. He’s still not training with the team, so we’ll have to wait and see.”
It’s unsurprising that Alisson and Frimpong won’t return before the November international break. While Slot hopes Isak could feature against Man City, the news remains frustrating for the £125m signing. Alisson has been out for five weeks, but the upcoming break may give him enough time to be ready for the return fixture against Nottingham Forest on November 22.
Frimpong is expected to be sidelined until early December, making his participation against Real Madrid and Man City unlikely. Isak, meanwhile, has had a stop-start start to his Liverpool career, recently recovering full fitness before suffering a groin injury against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Hopefully, he will at least be fit enough to make the bench next Sunday, providing a valuable option, especially with Erling Haaland expected in Pep Guardiola’s lineup.
