Liverpool have hit a rough patch in recent weeks, sparking growing worries about Arne Slot’s team early in the season.
The Reds’ 3-2 defeat to Brentford last time out has deepened concerns about their form and consistency, as they have now suffered four straight league losses — against Crystal Palace, Galatasaray, Chelsea, and Manchester United. This poor run has led to questions surrounding the performances of several key players.
One of Slot’s biggest challenges lies in defence, where the usually dependable partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté has failed to deliver. The lack of defensive depth has also become apparent, prompting reports from Football Insider that Liverpool are eyeing a new centre-back signing in January.
Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa has now emerged as one of Liverpool’s prime targets. The club has been closely monitoring his situation at Villa Park and could make a move when the transfer window reopens.
According to former Aston Villa senior scout Mick Brown — who remains well-connected at the club — Konsa’s impressive performances for both Villa and England have drawn attention from several top sides.
“It’s no shock big clubs are after Konsa,” Brown told Football Insider. “Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham are all tracking him. If he becomes available, that’s the kind of level he’d go to. His recent form shows he’s top quality — it’s a credit to Villa’s recruitment.”
Brown also suggested that Konsa would be an upgrade for Liverpool’s current defence and a strong alternative if a move for Marc Guehi falls through.
Konsa’s consistent displays this season have earned him widespread praise, with pundit Troy Deeney describing his showing against Manchester City as “fantastic.”
However, Football Insider reported on October 27 that Aston Villa have no intention of selling Konsa in January, as he remains a vital part of Unai Emery’s plans. Manchester City and Tottenham are also said to be interested, but Villa are determined to keep their core squad intact after a challenging summer.
Meanwhile, the club is looking to secure the future of another key player, Morgan Rogers, who is reportedly in advanced talks over a new contract to extend his stay at Villa Park.
