Virgil van Dijk sent a heartfelt message to “the people who celebrated with us last year” after Liverpool’s title defence took another major blow on Saturday night.
It was another nightmare evening for Arne Slot’s side, who fell 3–2 to Brentford, with Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and Igor Thiago all finding the net. The defeat marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive Premier League loss, leaving them seventh in the table—four points behind leaders Arsenal and trailing Bournemouth, Manchester United, and surprise contenders Sunderland.
After the match, a visibly frustrated Arne Slot didn’t hold back. Asked if it was Liverpool’s worst performance under his tenure, he admitted:
> “Yeah, I think it’s up there. Normally when we’re 1–0 or 2–0 down, we respond well—but tonight was different. We didn’t do the basics right. Brentford deserved credit; they won more duels, more second balls, and the energy in the stadium pushed them.”
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk echoed that disappointment when speaking to TNT Sports, admitting that the team’s recent struggles were difficult to explain.
> “It’s hard to say what’s wrong. We haven’t kept a clean sheet in nine games. People might blame individuals or the defence, but it’s a collective issue. Everyone, including me, needs to look in the mirror.”
He added that the team is working tirelessly to turn things around behind the scenes:
> “We’re training hard, doing everything to improve, but it’s tough right now. We need each other, we need the fans — especially those who celebrated with us last season — to stick by us now more than ever. I’m confident we’ll bounce back because the quality is there, both defensively and offensively.”
Van Dijk concluded by emphasizing the team’s immediate goals:
> “We’re chasing a clean sheet — and more importantly, a win. That’s the reality.”
