Arne Slot and Liverpool haven’t secured a Premier League win since September 20, when they defeated Everton at Anfield thanks to early goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike. Their most recent outing, a 3-2 loss to Brentford, has deepened their struggles — and after the match, Slot voiced frustration about the team’s fixture schedule.
Dango Ouattara opened the scoring just five minutes in, with Kevin Schade soon doubling Brentford’s advantage. Milos Kerkez pulled one back for Liverpool before halftime, but Igor Thiago restored the Bees’ two-goal cushion from the penalty spot in the second half. Mohamed Salah struck late to make it 3-2, but despite seven minutes of added time, Liverpool couldn’t salvage a point.
The defeat marked Liverpool’s fourth straight Premier League loss, leaving them sixth in the standings — four points behind leaders Arsenal, who still have a game in hand.
October has been a difficult month for the Merseyside club. Their only victory came in the Champions League against Eintracht Frankfurt, offering little comfort during a challenging run for a side that spent over £400 million on new signings this summer.
Slot brought in the likes of Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Hugo Ekitike to refresh the squad, but the team is still finding its rhythm. Speaking to Sky Sports after the Brentford defeat, Slot explained that opponents have learned how to play against Liverpool:
> “Teams have a certain playing style against us, which is a very good strategy, and we haven’t found an answer to it yet. Going 1-0 down so early doesn’t help either.”
The Dutch manager added that while Liverpool continue to score and create chances, their defensive frailties remain a major issue:
> “We still manage to score two goals and create more, but you can’t compete when you concede so many. It’s not just about the defenders — it’s a collective issue. We changed a lot in the summer, so some inconsistency is expected, but I didn’t think we’d lose four in a row.”
Slot also pointed to Liverpool’s heavy travel schedule as a contributing factor:
> “From our last six games, five have been away. That’s not helpful when you’re struggling for form.”
His comments have split opinion among fans. Some supporters believe Slot’s remarks sound like excuses, while others are beginning to lose patience with the 47-year-old. One fan wrote, “Can he stop giving interviews?” while another suggested he might already be hinting at an exit, saying, “If he really said that, he’s gone.”
Liverpool now turn their focus to the League Cup, where they’ll face Crystal Palace at Anfield, before hosting their next Premier League game in early November. After that, a crucial Champions League meeting with Real Madrid awaits.
