“Like a kid among men” – Paul Scholes delivers scathing verdict on Liverpool’s summer signing

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has taken a ruthless swipe at Liverpool’s summer signing Milos Kerkez following the defender’s underwhelming start at Anfield.

The Hungarian full-back impressed at Bournemouth before sealing a high-profile move to Liverpool, but his performances so far have failed to convince. Tasked with replacing Andrew Robertson as the Reds’ first-choice left-back, Kerkez has struggled to live up to expectations.

Robertson returned to Arne Slot’s starting lineup against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League this week, and his display suggested he may deserve to reclaim his spot on a permanent basis.

Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes didn’t hold back, claiming Kerkez currently “looks like a kid playing against men.” Other pundits echoed concerns over Liverpool’s shaky defence, particularly highlighting the full-backs’ inconsistency.

Jeremie Frimpong, who joined in the summer to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, has also faced scrutiny, with many arguing he plays more like a winger than a defender.

Scholes, however, reserved his harshest criticism for Kerkez, insisting the 21-year-old must improve quickly if he wants to succeed at a club of Liverpool’s stature.

So far, Liverpool’s summer recruits have largely disappointed. Kerkez and Frimpong have looked uncertain, Florian Wirtz only recently registered his first goal involvement, and Alexander Isak has appeared off the pace. The only bright spot has been Hugo Ekitike, though he’s yet to secure a consistent starting role under Slot.
