Carragher Reveals the Real Reason Behind Liverpool’s Anfield Collapse

Several Manchester United fans have taken to social media to applaud Jamie Carragher for his insightful analysis.

 

United supporters are still beaming after their side’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday — and rightly so. Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire, either side of Cody Gakpo’s equaliser, earned the Red Devils a crucial three points and their first win at Anfield since January 2016. The result also marked Ruben Amorim’s first back-to-back wins since replacing Erik ten Hag in autumn 2024.

 

In an unexpected twist, former Liverpool captain Carragher showered Amorim and his players with praise during his Monday Night Football analysis ahead of West Ham’s clash with Brentford.

 

Breaking down United’s tactical setup, the 47-year-old highlighted their disciplined “low block,” which effectively frustrated Liverpool and limited their chances to break through the defence.

 

“Ruben Amorim got his tactics absolutely spot on at Anfield,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “That was the only way they could win — by playing in a low block.”

 

He further explained how United’s back five stayed “narrow underneath the ball” and how their compact shape helped them recover second balls. “Nobody really goes for the first ball in behind — it’s about being ready for the second one,” he added, noting Amorim’s tactical discipline in attack and defence.

 

Carragher, who made 737 appearances for Liverpool — second-most in the club’s history — also criticised Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté for failing to track Mbeumo’s 31-yard run that led to the opener.

 

Despite his Liverpool roots, many United fans praised Carragher for his fair and detailed breakdown.
