Liverpool star Florian Wirtz told to meet big expectations or risk being benched by Arne Slot

Florian Wirtz has found it difficult to make his mark at Liverpool since completing his high-profile transfer from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer.

 

The German midfielder’s early struggles at Anfield have led former Reds defender Jamie Carragher to suggest that Wirtz might benefit from some time on the bench. However, despite those challenges, no Premier League player has created more chances for teammates across all competitions this season.

 

Wirtz will now aim to raise his game when Liverpool face arch-rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon (4:30pm kick-off).

 

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has shared his thoughts on what can be expected from his fellow countryman this season following a tricky start to life in England.

 

“If they win the league and he plays his part, then he’s done what’s expected,” Hamann told Grosvenor Casino. “He’s still young, but that doesn’t excuse him — a big price tag brings big expectations.

 

“He’s had a slow start, but he needs to adapt quickly. The Premier League is more physical and faster, and referees don’t give fouls as easily as in Germany. He has to get used to that intensity and mature fast.”

 

While Hamann believes Wirtz will eventually settle in, he also warned that Liverpool boss Arne Slot may be forced to make tough decisions if progress isn’t shown soon.

 

“When you play in England, you must grow up quickly,” he added. “If he delivers a few more poor performances, Slot might decide to rest him for part of a match — and if the team performs well without him, that could make things difficult.”

 

“Of course, with so many fixtures, he’ll still get chances, but it’s important he finds form soon. I’m not obsessed with assist numbers — sometimes they don’t tell the full story — but I know how talented he is. I’ve been praising him for years.
