Alexander Isak’s latest display for Sweden in the World Cup qualifiers has sparked outrage among fans.
During the international break, Liverpool’s record summer signing joined his national team for crucial fixtures against Switzerland and Kosovo. Many supporters were eager to see the forward rediscover his form — but what they witnessed left them frustrated.
Sweden, already under pressure with just one point from their opening two group games, fell to a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland on home soil. Isak, who led the line, missed a huge chance to score when he struck the post from close range after a fine setup by Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall.
That moment seemed to define his night — one off-target shot, one big miss, 12 completed passes from 16, and only one successful duel out of seven. Fans took to social media to vent their anger, with one writing: “He’s destroyed Sweden’s World Cup hopes with his selfish summer behaviour.” Another added: “Isak looks miles off it — unfit and unfocused.”
Their frustration dates back to the summer transfer window, when Isak went on strike at Newcastle United to force a move to Liverpool. The £125 million transfer eventually went through, but his lack of fitness has been clear — with only four starts for the Reds so far.
Now, as Sweden’s qualification dreams hang by a thread, many are pointing to Isak’s disrupted preseason and poor form as key reasons behind their national team’s struggles.
