Several Liverpool supporters believe it’s time to scrutinize one player’s performances after his disappointing display in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea.
The Reds made a sluggish start at Stamford Bridge as they tried to end a poor run that had seen them suffer consecutive defeats to Crystal Palace and Galatasaray the previous week. Chelsea took the lead early when Moises Caicedo fired past Liverpool’s stand-in goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, making his full Premier League debut in the 14th minute.
Liverpool, last season’s Premier League champions, eventually equalized through Cody Gakpo after a clever assist from Alexander Isak in the 63rd minute. However, hopes of salvaging a draw were dashed deep into stoppage time when 18-year-old Brazilian Estevao converted Marc Cucurella’s pass to secure a dramatic victory for Chelsea.
It was far from a classic Liverpool performance, with key figures like Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konaté struggling to make an impact. Among those singled out was Alexis Mac Allister, who has been below his best in recent weeks. Many fans felt his form has dipped significantly at the start of the 2025/26 season.
Caicedo repeatedly got the better of the Argentine midfielder, and supporters didn’t hold back in their criticism online. One wrote: “Mac Allister, I love you, but we need to send him to Atletico and get a more mobile midfielder. He’s hurting us every game.”
Another added: “Mac Allister is nowhere near last season’s level — it’s concerning.” A third fan commented: “He presses too eagerly, gets bypassed, and it keeps costing us goals — just like last season against Newcastle.”
Others called for him to be rested, saying he has slowed down Liverpool’s counterattacks and that his passing has been unusually poor this season. Mac Allister was eventually substituted for Wataru Endo in the 87th minute after another difficult outing.
Liverpool now turn their focus to their next Premier League fixture — a clash with Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, October 19, following the international break.
