Giovanni Leoni faces a lengthy recovery after tearing his ACL in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup win over Southampton.
The 18-year-old’s debut ended in agony after an awkward fall, with Arne Slot confirming he’ll be sidelined for at least a year. Injury expert Ben Dinnery has warned, however, that his return could be delayed until late 2026 or even 2027.
While the setback isn’t expected to be career-threatening, regaining full form will take time, and Liverpool will need to manage his progress carefully given his age.
It’s a cruel blow for such a promising young defender, but with strong backing from the club and guidance from Virgil van Dijk – who’s overcome the same injury – Leoni won’t walk the road to recovery alone.
