After spending five years at Liverpool, Kostas Tsimikas moved to AS Roma on a season-long loan just over a month ago.
Following the arrival of Milos Kerkez in the summer, who has often been chosen ahead of Andy Robertson, Tsimikas found himself third in the pecking order for the left-back position at Anfield. Seeking more regular playing time, the Greek international decided to temporarily leave Merseyside.
So far, Tsimikas has only featured for nine minutes in Serie A, but he earned his first start under coach Gian Piero Gasperini as Roma kicked off their Europa League campaign against Nice on Wednesday.
Tsimikas shone by setting up the winning goal in Roma’s 2-1 victory. His precise cross was perfectly headed in by Gianluca Mancini, doubling Roma’s lead before Nice pulled one back in the final quarter of the match.
During the celebration, cameras caught Nice owner Jim Ratcliffe looking unimpressed from the stands. Since Ratcliffe is also co-owner of Manchester United, Tsimikas making an impact against a club connected to his current owner likely pleased Liverpool fans even more.
Although Tsimikas never secured a regular starting spot at Anfield, he still made 115 appearances for Liverpool—a notable total—and featured in a third of their games during the successful 2024/25 Premier League season.
He has yet to score a competitive goal for Liverpool but has provided 18 assists. His creativity was on display again for Roma in their Europa League opener.
Known affectionately as the ‘Greek Scouser,’ the 29-year-old is well-liked on Merseyside for his lively personality and clear affection for Liverpool, which he even referenced on Instagram by calling himself a ‘Scouser in Rome.’
While it seems unlikely Tsimikas will overtake Kerkez or Robertson upon his return to Liverpool, he can only focus on making the most of his chances with Roma for now.
He certainly did that against Nice on Wednesday, and hopefully, the Liverpool loanee will continue to have important moments for Roma in the months ahead.
