Liverpool have suffered a major setback in their attempt to sign a star player widely regarded as the ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah.
After months of intense speculation about Salah’s contract, the Liverpool forward signed a new deal in April, ending rumors of a summer departure.
Salah’s previous contract was set to expire this summer, but his new agreement will keep him at Anfield until 2027. However, with Salah now 33 years old, Liverpool are likely preparing for a future without their key player.
Unfortunately for the club, their plans to bring in a potential successor might face difficulties, as signing the player considered the best candidate to replace Salah appears to be more challenging than expected.
Few players in football can match the exceptional standards Salah has set during his eight years at Liverpool.
In 408 games for the Reds, Salah has scored an outstanding 248 goals and provided 116 assists—figures that will be tough to match.
One player suggested as a possible replacement is Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, who has impressed since moving from Crystal Palace to Bayern in July 2024.
Olise has scored 26 goals and contributed 24 assists in 62 appearances at the Allianz Arena, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top talents.
He is contracted with Bayern until 2029, but reports indicate a release clause could come into effect in the summer of 2026.
However, a report from German outlet SPORT BILD suggests Bayern may negotiate a contract extension with Olise before the season concludes.
Though talks have not started, the club is very pleased with his performances.
“Michael feels extremely comfortable in the group. It’s just a good mix at the moment,” said Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund.
German legend Lothar Matthaus also praised Olise to SPORT BILD, saying, “He has everything an outstanding footballer needs. I see no limits for him. And the example of Ousmane Dembélé shows that a winger can become a world-class footballer.”
