Virgil van Dijk fondly remembers past triumphs in the Carabao Cup and says Liverpool are eager to create more success this season.
The captain has lifted the trophy twice with the club, in 2022 and 2024, and reached another final last year, when Liverpool lost to Newcastle United.
The journey to Wembley resumes tonight as Southampton visit Anfield for a third-round match starting at 8pm BST.
In his notes for the official matchday programme, Van Dijk shares: “The Carabao Cup will always hold a special place in my heart, and I’m sure the fans feel the same given the success we’ve had in this competition over the years.
“Personally, I will never forget the emotions we experienced at Wembley when we defeated Chelsea in both 2022 and 2024. Those moments are among the best I’ve had.
“Of course, losing to Newcastle in last season’s final was disappointing. But now, we’re excited to get started again tonight as we host one of my former clubs, Southampton.
“We enter the game with plenty of confidence after a hard-earned win over Everton in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
“To win three games in six days, all against tough, well-organized teams, really shows the quality and spirit of this squad.
“We had to work hard and endure tough moments, but the effort we put in daily is clearly reflected in our performances this season.”
He adds: “I keep saying it, but we’ll need every player if we want another successful season.
“We’ve already seen substitutes come on and influence games this campaign, which shows the strength of this group. Even those who haven’t played as much are ready to step up and make a difference.
“With many matches ahead in various competitions, the message to everyone is clear: work hard, stay humble, keep focused, and be ready when called upon. Success won’t come from just 11 or 12 players—it will be the entire squad.
“Looking ahead to tonight, I’m excited for another amazing atmosphere at Anfield. The crowd was incredible against Everton and Atletico Madrid, and we hope for more of the same this evening.”
