Hugo Ekitike’s transfer to Liverpool was one of the standout moves of this summer’s transfer window.
There had been widespread speculation that Newcastle United were heavily interested—possibly even leading the chase—before Liverpool stepped in. However, much of that speculation now appears to have been unfounded. Ekitike himself has come forward to clarify the situation, putting an end to the rumours and explaining exactly how the transfer unfolded.
Was Ekitike nearly joining Newcastle United?
Some believed Ekitike might have been waiting on Newcastle to make a move.
But in an interview with French media outlet Canal+, as reported by Foot Mercato, Ekitike made it clear that Liverpool was always his intended destination.
“Why Liverpool instead of Newcastle? It was my choice, it’s what I wanted,” he stated.
“I had a stronger feeling about coming here, and I knew it was the right time and place for me. I wanted to return to the top level, better prepared and ready in every way. I don’t think I made the wrong decision.”
The 23-year-old forward has hit the ground running at Anfield, scoring four goals in seven appearances across all competitions for Arne Slot’s side.
Ekitike emphasized that Liverpool was always on his mind.
He described the move as perfectly timed and the right fit, driven by a genuine feeling that it was the right step.
After an unremarkable spell at Paris Saint-Germain, Ekitike was confident that Liverpool was the ideal club to elevate his career this summer.
There were no significant discussions or deals with Newcastle, contradicting much of the earlier media speculation.
