Liverpool fans were left stunned by Virgil van Dijk’s position in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings.
The winner of this year’s award is set to be revealed on Monday night at a ceremony held at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Many of the sport’s biggest stars are expected to attend as they await the announcement of who has been voted the world’s best player.
Ahead of the official reveal, the Ballon d’Or’s social media account has been gradually releasing the rankings of other nominees. The early announcements, listing players ranked 30th to 26th, have already stirred up controversy online.
Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise was ranked 30th, with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland coming in at 26th. But what really caught fans off guard was Van Dijk’s placement at 28th — behind Arsenal’s Declan Rice, who came in 27th.
Many supporters took to social media to voice their disbelief and frustration. One fan posted on X: “Liverpool dominated last season thanks to VVD… Wtf are these rankings?” Another wrote: “Rice over Van Dijk. This award has no credibility.”
