Liverpool were very active in the 2025 summer transfer window, and similar activity could follow in 2026. Several notable departures have been speculated for that period, with Andy Robertson among those potentially leaving. Although strongly linked with a move to Atletico Madrid last summer, Robertson ultimately stayed at Anfield. However, the Spanish club remains interested, and Robertson has just nine months left on his current contract.
Uncertainty surrounds Robertson’s future at Liverpool, especially since he is no longer the first-choice left-back. Still, he is expected to remain with the club until his contract expires.
According to Football Insider, Pete O’Rourke has stated that Atletico Madrid doesn’t plan to pursue Robertson in the January transfer window, though they might try to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with the Scotland international.
“Look, I don’t see Atletico Madrid making a move for Robertson in January. They signed Matteo Ruggeri from Atalanta in the summer and also have Javi Galan at left-back, so I doubt they’ll be looking to sign Robertson in January. However, if Robertson doesn’t renew his contract soon, he’ll be free to talk to foreign clubs in January and could potentially leave on a free transfer. That said, Liverpool likely don’t want to lose him as he still has a role to play at Anfield.”
It will be worth watching whether Robertson leaves Liverpool next summer. If he does, Milos Kerkez would likely take over as the primary left-back, though a new signing might still be needed—unless Kostas Tsimikas, returning from injury, is chosen as Robertson’s replacement.
