Jack Grealish appeared frustrated after Everton suffered defeat in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool. The Manchester City loanee expressed his dissatisfaction with several referee decisions during his post-match interview with TNT Sports.
Since moving from the Etihad to Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer, the England international has continued his strong form. He had a competitive battle with Liverpool’s full-back Conor Bradley, creating several promising opportunities.
One notable moment was his assist leading to Idrissa Gana Gueye’s consolation goal in the second half. Grealish’s cross found Iliman Ndiaye at the far post, who then set up Gueye to score past Alisson. Despite his efforts, well-executed goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike kept Liverpool comfortably ahead.
Grealish Confused by Referee’s Decisions
As the game ended, Grealish and manager David Moyes quickly approached referee Darren England to challenge several calls they believed were unfair. Speaking to TNT Sports, Grealish explained his frustration, particularly about midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall being shown a yellow card for taking a quick free-kick, a decision he found baffling.
“I’ve never seen a player get booked for a quick free-kick before. I have no idea where that rule came from,” Grealish said. “Even the stoppage time seemed off — they showed three minutes but only played one. I haven’t seen that happen in the Premier League for years.”
When asked about his overall thoughts on the referee’s performance, Grealish added, “I understand sometimes the referee lets the game flow, but you can’t ignore decisions against us while giving fouls to Liverpool for minimal contact.”
During the broadcast, TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist also criticized the yellow card decision, calling it “nonsense” and suggesting the officials should apply some common sense despite the rules.
