Hugo Ekitike Shines in First Merseyside Derby for Liverpool
Hugo Ekitike is the man of the moment on the red side of Merseyside after a standout debut in the Liverpool derby.
The French forward scored Liverpool’s second goal just before the 30-minute mark, which turned out to be the match-winner after Idrissa Gueye pulled one back for Everton in the second half, setting up a tense finale at Anfield.
The 23-year-old earned praise from Stephen Warnock, who described his display as highly “impressive.” Ekitike justified Arne Slot’s call to start him over Alexander Isak in this high-stakes clash.
Welcoming the Challenge from Isak
Ekitike was substituted in the second half for Isak — a reversal of their midweek roles — and the two big summer signings have yet to share the pitch together.
But the derby goal-scorer believes it’s only a matter of time, telling TNT Sports:
> “He’s a top player — I used to watch him even before I came here. His presence is great for me because I can learn and improve from him.
“It’s competitive, sure, but I believe we’ll play together and make an impact. Hopefully, that happens soon.”
When asked by presenter Jules Breach whether he’s given manager Arne Slot a selection dilemma, Ekitike joked:
> “That’s the coach’s problem! I’m just doing my job.”
Slot Will Rely on Both Strikers This Season
Liverpool faced some criticism for splashing close to £200m on both Isak and Ekitike within weeks — particularly with both vying for one position.
However, Isak is still regaining form after a summer without game time, and had Liverpool only signed one striker, they may have been accused of lacking squad depth.
Ekitike has quickly won over the Anfield faithful with his strong performances and relentless energy. His grounded, team-first attitude — as shown in his post-match comments — will only endear him further to Liverpool supporters.
Given the demands of the modern game, both Ekitike and Isak are expected to feature heavily this season, and it’s likely Slot will eventually find a way to utilize both in the same starting lineup.
At just 23, Ekitike is already beginning to justify Liverpool’s £69 million outlay on him.
