Liverpool Beat Everton in First Merseyside Derby of the Season
Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory over Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the Premier League season this weekend. Arne Slot’s side came into the match with momentum, having won all their games so far, including a Champions League triumph against Atletico Madrid midweek. Everton, meanwhile, had also made a solid start to the campaign, sitting sixth with seven points from their opening four matches.
Despite Everton’s form, it was Liverpool who began strongly. Just 10 minutes in, Mohamed Salah played a clever pass to Ryan Gravenberch, who finished confidently to put the Reds ahead. Hugo Ekitike added a second before halftime, slotting the ball through Jordan Pickford’s legs.
Everton responded after the break, with Idrissa Gueye scoring shortly before the hour mark to give his side hope. However, Liverpool held firm to claim all three points and maintain their position at the top of the table.
Cody Gakpo Struggles in Derby Win
Despite the win, not every Liverpool player impressed. Cody Gakpo had a tough outing, contributing little going forward. He managed just one off-target shot, lost possession 11 times, was beaten on the dribble twice, and committed a foul.
In comparison to his teammates, Gakpo underperformed. With stiff competition for attacking roles and Liverpool aiming for the Premier League title, the Dutch international — who earns £150,000 per week — will need to raise his game to retain his place in the lineup.
Manager Arne Slot substituted Gakpo for Florian Wirtz in the 60th minute. Alexander Isak also began the game on the bench, and with both big-money signings expected to feature more regularly, Gakpo’s poor form may see him sidelined.
Although Liverpool have won every game this season, they’ve yet to hit top gear across 90 minutes. If they want to fully hit their stride, giving Wirtz or Isak a chance in place of Gakpo might be the way forward.
