Liverpool fans have been sharing their reactions on social media following Alexander Isak’s debut.
On Wednesday evening, Liverpool began their UEFA Champions League journey by hosting Atletico Madrid, the Spanish La Liga champions, at Anfield.
Before the game, all eyes were on Arne Slot’s starting lineup, which included Isak as the striker. The Swedish forward joined Liverpool from Newcastle United on transfer deadline day for a British record fee of £125 million. After missing the late win against Burnley on Sunday, Isak was named in the starting XI for the first time.
Liverpool took the lead within the first five minutes when Mohamed Salah’s free kick deflected off Andy Robertson and into the net.
Just two minutes later, Salah scored again, putting Liverpool 2-0 up.
Atletico Madrid pulled one back right before halftime through Marcos Llorente.
Fans on social media have shown mixed opinions about Isak’s debut. Some praised his abilities, while others noted that the 25-year-old doesn’t seem fully fit yet. One fan said, “Isak you had me at the step over.” Another commented, “Isak seems a bit rusty but that’s expected.” A third added, “Even just seeing him run, it’s clear Isak will need a few weeks to reach full fitness.”
Others noticed his tiredness, with one fan joking, “Isak looks tired already lol,” and another writing, “Isak, if that’s all we get from you tonight, we enjoyed it.” One more remarked, “Isak will be great for us once he’s fully fit. He looks rusty and tired now.”
Meanwhile, on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Everton and England midfielder Leon Osman praised Salah, saying, “Mohamed Salah has looked far sharper in these first 20 minutes or so than he has in any of Liverpool’s first four Premier League games this season.”
Liverpool will return to Premier League action this weekend, hosting Everton at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
