Atletico Madrid have named a 22-man squad for their Champions League clash with Liverpool on Wednesday night, though a number of key players are missing.
The Spanish side are heading to Anfield for the third time in six years. Their last visit ended in a 2-0 defeat during the 2021/22 group stage, though they famously knocked Liverpool out in the round of 16 back in March 2020.
One of the biggest concerns for Diego Simeone’s team came over the weekend when Julian Alvarez was taken off at halftime during their 2-0 win over Villarreal, raising doubts about his availability for the European fixture.
Alvarez not included in Atletico squad for Anfield trip
On Tuesday morning, Atletico Madrid confirmed via their official English X (formerly Twitter) account that Alvarez has not been included in the travelling squad for the match.
Also missing from the group are Jose Maria Gimenez, Johnny Cardoso, Thiago Almada, and Alex Baena. However, David Hancko, Robin Le Normand, and Nico Gonzalez have all made the squad, despite having injury concerns in the Villarreal match.
Alvarez a big miss, but Atletico still pose an attacking threat
Alvarez, who scored 29 times in 54 appearances last season, will be a significant absence for Atletico. His former club, Manchester City, will be familiar with his quality. Liverpool remain favourites for the tie, according to Opta’s prediction model, which tips them as the most likely winners of the 2025/26 Champions League.
Still, Atletico boast firepower in Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sørloth, who combined for 41 goals last season. Their presence means Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté will need to be on high alert.
Liverpool close to full strength ahead of group stage opener
Liverpool, meanwhile, are in good shape going into the match. Only Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic are ruled out, while Alexis Mac Allister is expected to be fit despite picking up a knock in the weekend win over Burnley.
Manager Arne Slot is due to provide a more comprehensive injury update later today, and the hope is that there won’t be any late fitness concerns ahead of the Champions League opener.
While Alvarez’s injury is unfortunate for Atletico, no one likes to see a player sidelined, and we wish him a speedy recovery.
