Just In: Liverpool summer signing potentially facing ‘extended spell’ out of the team

Milos Kerkez is reportedly set for a prolonged absence from Liverpool’s starting lineup after a disappointing display against Burnley, according to Football Insider. The Hungarian left-back, who joined from Bournemouth during the summer transfer window, had been a regular starter under Arne Slot since the beginning of the season.

His inclusion had pushed veteran Andy Robertson to the bench, and while Kerkez had generally performed well, his spot is now under threat. His lack of experience showed during the Burnley game, where he received a yellow card for diving, prompting Slot to substitute him in the first half.

Robertson came on and delivered an excellent performance, helping Liverpool secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Scott Parker’s side. The experienced Scotsman’s display may convince Slot to reinstate him as the first-choice left-back.

Former chief scout Mick Brown weighed in on Kerkez’s situation, telling Football Insider that the young defender will find it difficult to reclaim his spot. He noted that Slot’s decision to substitute Kerkez early was likely to prevent a potential red card, but also reflected dissatisfaction with the player’s performance.

Brown added that Robertson remains one of the top left-backs in the league and will be eager to re-establish himself. While he still believes Kerkez is a highly-rated talent with significant potential, he emphasized that competition is fierce at elite clubs. Players must be consistent, as any drop in form can open the door for someone else to step in.

Though Kerkez may now lose his place in the starting XI, this setback doesn’t mark the end of his prospects at Liverpool. He remains a promising young player with room to grow, particularly under the guidance of Arne Slot. While his attacking skills are notable, he still has work to do defensively—and this period out of the team could serve as a crucial learning opportunity.
