Crystal Palace have surprised many with the high asking price they’ve set for their defender and club captain, Marc Guéhi.
The Eagles blocked the England international’s move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window, aware that the defender will become a free agent next summer.
Although they risk losing him for nothing next year, Palace might still opt to sell Guéhi in the January transfer window.
Crystal Palace open to letting Liverpool target leave
According to Spanish news outlet Fichajes, Palace could let Guéhi go in January—but only for a significantly reduced fee of around €20 million (£17 million), despite his contract running until mid-2026.
This price drop is striking, especially compared to the £35 million bid Liverpool made during the summer.
Liverpool nearly secured Guéhi’s signing in the summer. Palace accepted a £35 million offer, the player completed a medical, and terms seemed settled. However, the transfer fell through at the last minute.
Palace struggled to find a suitable replacement, even though they considered signing Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse to fill the gap left by their captain’s potential departure.
Should Arne Slot pursue Guéhi in January?
Liverpool are currently assessing their options. They might revisit negotiations in January or wait until Guéhi’s contract expires in summer 2026.
Their decision will largely depend on the fitness and form of Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate leading up to January.
At present, with Joe Gomez serving as backup, Liverpool are not in urgent need of signing Guéhi in January. However, the situation could change in the coming months depending on the team’s needs and the manager’s preferences.
