Liverpool’s Champions League opener comes with added drama as Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez sparked injury concerns just days before their clash at Anfield.
The Argentine forward, who joined Diego Simeone’s side from Manchester City in August 2024, was taken off at half-time during Atletico’s 2-1 La Liga win over Villarreal. Reports (via Liverpool ECHO) indicate the substitution was precautionary after he experienced discomfort in the first half.
Simeone cautious over Alvarez’s availability
After the match, Simeone addressed the situation, saying:
“Until he wakes up tomorrow and gets through the early hours after the discomfort, we won’t know for sure. We’re hoping it’s nothing serious and that he recovers quickly.”
Alvarez, 25, has rapidly become a central figure in Atletico’s attack, having scored 29 goals and provided eight assists in 57 appearances last season.
His potential absence would be a major setback for the Spanish side, particularly as they prepare to face the Premier League champions in their first group-stage fixture.
Liverpool keeping close eye on key threat
Alvarez attempted to ease concerns by posting on Instagram: “Happy about the victory. Now focused on the first Champions League match,” implying he expects to be involved against Liverpool — though it’s unclear if he’ll be fully fit.
Liverpool are already familiar with Alvarez’s talent — he netted twice in five games against them while at City. His form even prompted a summer transfer discussion involving a potential swap with Luis Diaz, and Liverpool were reportedly interested before ultimately signing Alexander Isak.
Given his quality and recent connections to Anfield, Alvarez’s condition will be watched closely ahead of the match, as Simeone anxiously waits to see if his star forward will be ready to lead the line.
