Jamie Carragher expressed his frustration with a Liverpool player after an “absolutely ridiculous” incident during the first half against Burnley.
Arne Slot’s team faced Burnley at Turf Moor in their fourth Premier League game of the season.
Liverpool controlled possession for much of the opening 30 minutes but failed to seriously challenge Burnley’s goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The main controversy arose when left-back Milos Kerkez went down inside Burnley’s penalty area.
Kerkez appealed for a foul, claiming he was tripped by Josh Laurent, but the referee dismissed the appeal. With little contact evident, Kerkez was booked for simulation. Carragher, providing co-commentary for Sky Sports, was clear about his opinion on the matter.
“That was a dive, no question about it,” he said. “Nobody in the stadium believed otherwise. It was overly dramatic and completely unnecessary. There was hardly any contact at all. Kerkez was well-placed and could have crossed the ball instead.”
Kerkez was later substituted by Arne Slot in the 37th minute, replaced by Andy Robertson. Earlier, the 21-year-old had committed a foul near the halfway line but avoided a second booking.
Carragher praised the coach’s decision, saying: “Arne Slot managed the situation well. Kerkez’s actions in the first half — both the yellow card for diving and the foul — were unacceptable. The manager probably spoke to him about staying disciplined because this match could hinge on counter-attacks. If he gets caught out one-on-one again, he risks a second yellow and being sent off.”
