Liverpool have made another significant addition at the youth level, securing a highly regarded talent from Manchester City – a move confirmed directly through social media.
City academy midfielder Lucas Alford revealed via Instagram that he is joining Liverpool, posting images in the Reds’ training gear as he signed his contract.
This continues a growing trend of Liverpool recruiting promising players from City’s youth ranks.
Last year, the Reds signed defender Lucas Clarke from City, who is now progressing well with the U18s. Alford’s switch is the latest example, reinforcing the club’s efforts to attract elite young talent from their domestic rivals.
The 16-year-old, who has captained City’s youth sides and impressed at national-level tournaments, adds both leadership and versatility to Liverpool’s ranks. He is comfortable playing as a holding midfielder or a No.8, and will join a strong U16 setup at Kirkby, which includes the likes of Joshua Abe, Erik Farkas, and Vincent Joseph.
Liverpool’s ability to offer a clearer pathway to first-team football appears to be a decisive factor.
With academy graduates like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley, and Rio Ngumoha establishing themselves in the senior squad, Liverpool’s reputation for youth development is strong.
Despite the intense rivalry between the clubs, connections continue to grow. Notably, former Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders is now part of City’s coaching staff. Still, young talents like Alford are choosing Anfield for their future.
As Liverpool progress under Arne Slot, this latest academy addition further emphasizes their appeal — even among Manchester City’s top prospects.
