Liverpool’s Transfer Stance on Marc Guehi Becomes Clear
Liverpool’s plans at centre-back are now more defined after top journalist Paul Joyce revealed that the club will not reignite their interest in Marc Guehi during the January transfer window. Writing in The Times, Joyce stated that Liverpool will only consider signing the Crystal Palace defender on a free transfer next summer.
The England international was close to joining Liverpool on deadline day, with a £35 million deal agreed and a medical already completed. However, the move collapsed when Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish withdrew from the agreement after their attempt to sign Brighton’s Igor fell through. West Ham have also been implicated in the transfer chaos that ultimately prevented Guehi’s move to Anfield.
Guehi, frustrated by the late U-turn, had already expressed his desire to join Arne Slot’s side. Now in the final year of his contract, he is not expected to renew with Palace, putting the club at risk of losing him for free in 2026.
Joyce adds that Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes had initiated talks with Palace earlier in the summer, shortly after the Community Shield. Although a deal was nearly finalized, the club now feels no urgency to strengthen their defence in January, especially with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as starters and Giovanni Leoni arriving from Parma for £26 million.
Liverpool’s recruitment team is prepared to wait until Guehi’s contract expires, banking on the defender’s continued desire to join the club. However, competition is expected, with Real Madrid also reportedly interested in signing him on a free.
Parish has previously admitted that losing a valuable player like Guehi without a transfer fee would be financially damaging, but Liverpool’s position is now clear: they’ll only move for him on their terms — and only if he’s available for free.
