Liverpool have reportedly turned down a bold swap proposal that would have seen Federico Chiesa leave the club.
The Reds have finalized a £125 million agreement to sign Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, concluding a lengthy transfer saga this summer.
They’re also nearing a £35 million deal for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is in the final year of his contract. It’s been a summer of heavy investment for Liverpool, highlighted by a £105 million move for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen—nearly breaking the British transfer record, which will now be surpassed by the Isak signing.
In addition, they’ve secured deals for Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, and Giovanni Leoni, pushing their total transfer spending beyond £300 million.
However, that figure has been partially balanced by several outgoing transfers, with Jarell Quansah, Luis Diaz, Ben Doak, and Darwin Nunez all leaving the club.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have brought in over £150 million through player sales, providing the financial flexibility for such significant spending.
Despite this, the club rejected a surprising offer involving Chiesa. According to the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele, AC Milan expressed interest in the Italian winger earlier in the window.
Had the move gone through, Chiesa would have returned to Serie A after previous stints with Juventus and Fiorentina. Milan also proposed sending Portuguese forward Rafael Leão to Anfield, but Liverpool declined that option as well.
Effectively, the proposal was a swap deal between two Champions League finalists from 2005 and 2007.
Instead, Liverpool are now fully focused on finalizing the Guehi deal, though Crystal Palace are still searching for a replacement after their loan attempt for Brighton’s Igor fell through.
