Alexander Isak is close to making Premier League history as Liverpool have agreed to sign the Swedish international from Newcastle for a British-record transfer fee.
The summer’s biggest transfer saga wasn’t resolved until deadline day, with reports late Sunday night suggesting Isak will have a medical on Monday ahead of a £130 million deal.
The 25-year-old has been keen to join Arne Slot’s team for weeks, even refusing to play for Newcastle to push through the move. Liverpool initially had a £110 million offer rejected but were expected to come back with a higher bid before the transfer window closes at 7 pm on September 1.
They did just that, submitting a £130 million offer to Newcastle, which includes solidarity payments, according to The Athletic.
Liverpool are set to pay £125 million for Isak, breaking the Premier League transfer record previously held by Enzo Fernández’s £106 million move from Chelsea to Benfica in 2023.
Newcastle seemed reluctant to sell until they secured additional attacking reinforcements, and last week they signed Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £69 million.
Isak openly wanted to leave Newcastle this summer and was excluded from their pre-season plans. Things escalated when he accused Newcastle of “breaking promises” about allowing his departure, which the club denied, with manager Eddie Howe affirming he wanted to keep Isak.
Before last week’s Premier League match between Newcastle and Liverpool, Isak met with a Public Investment Fund delegation and Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben to discuss his future, reiterating his wish to join Liverpool.
Liverpool reportedly waited for approval from Newcastle’s board before moving forward, and with the deadline approaching, it seems the transfer is nearly complete.
Liverpool have already spent over £300 million this summer on players like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez. Isak’s signing is expected to push their total spending beyond £400 million.
Looking ahead, Liverpool are also linked with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, with a deal possibly worth £35 million plus add-ons. If completed, manager Arne Slot could field one of the strongest Liverpool squads in recent Premier League history.
