Jamie Carragher has responded publicly to a Liverpool supporter who accused him of disliking one of the team’s current players.
Liverpool’s start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign has been dramatic, despite their perfect record. Under new manager Arne Slot, the Reds have won both of their opening games, with late goals from Federico Chiesa and Rio Ngumoha helping them edge past Bournemouth and Newcastle United. However, their defensive performances have raised concerns, with both opponents scoring twice, exposing Liverpool’s vulnerabilities at the back.
One player under scrutiny is centre-back Ibrahima Konaté, whom Carragher has openly criticised for his recent displays.
A fan took to social media to defend Konaté, stating: “Konaté was our best centre-back during parts of last season. Carragher has a list of players he dislikes. When they’re in form, he says nothing, but when they struggle, he makes noise. The opposite applies to his favourites.”
Carragher quickly replied: “That’s not true. I don’t hate him – he’s a very good Premier League centre-back playing next to the best one the league has ever seen. That makes him, and others who partner Van Dijk, look 20% better. When I assess top defenders, I ask whether they can lead and organise a back four – and I’m not convinced in Konaté’s case.”
He added: “During Van Dijk’s absence, Konaté had a chance to lead in big games. I recognise his strengths – he’s quick and strong in the air – and I don’t believe Marc Guehi would automatically replace him if he joins.”
Konaté’s future at Liverpool remains uncertain, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season. Real Madrid have reportedly shown interest in signing him on a free transfer next summer.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have bolstered their squad by signing promising Italian defender Giovanni Leoni and remain in pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, although time is running out with the transfer window closing on Monday.
The Reds will next face Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday in what promises to be a key early-season clash.
