After a series of unsuccessful attempts during the summer transfer window, could Newcastle finally be on the verge of signing a new striker?
The Magpies have repeatedly struggled to reinforce their attacking line, missing out on Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitike, and Benjamin Sesko, while also seeing multiple bids for Yoane Wissa and Jorgen Strand Larsen turned down. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak has expressed a desire to leave St James’ Park amid ongoing interest from Liverpool. However, Newcastle have made it clear that the Swedish forward won’t be sold unless they secure a replacement and their asking price is met.
Newcastle reach agreement for Nick Woltemade
On Thursday night, reports surfaced that Newcastle have finally made progress in their striker search.
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, the club has reached a full agreement with Stuttgart to sign Nick Woltemade. The deal is reportedly worth €85 million (£73.5 million) plus €5 million (£4.3 million) in performance-based add-ons. The 23-year-old striker has already bid farewell to teammates at the MHPArena and is believed to be en route to Tyneside.
Sky Sports’ Keith Downie later confirmed the report, adding that Woltemade is scheduled to undergo a medical in the northeast within the next 24 hours.
Will this open the door for Isak to move to Liverpool?
Now that Newcastle are close to signing a new striker, attention shifts to what this might mean for Alexander Isak’s future.
Woltemade’s expected arrival doesn’t guarantee that Isak will be allowed to leave, especially since Liverpool’s initial £110 million offer earlier in August fell well short of Newcastle’s £150 million valuation. Still, finalizing the German’s transfer could make the club more open to letting their No. 14 move to Anfield before Monday’s 7 p.m. transfer deadline.
The timing may also help Newcastle, as they aren’t set to face Liverpool again until late January — unless drawn together in a domestic cup competition. Their most recent encounter ended in a thrilling 3–2 match, sealed by Rio Ngumoha’s stoppage-time goal.
Liverpool will be hoping for a classic chain reaction in the final days of the window — with Woltemade’s signing potentially clearing the way for Isak to make the switch to the Premier League champions.
