The club season will take a break next week for the first international window of the autumn, but one Liverpool player already knows he won’t be involved.
After their high-stakes clash with Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday, many of Arne Slot’s players will head off to join their national teams across Europe and beyond. However, one surprising omission means a key Liverpool forward will remain on Merseyside during the international break.
Ekitike left out of France squad by Deschamps
France manager Didier Deschamps has named his squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Iceland, as revealed via the official @equipedefrance X account.
Defender Ibrahima Konate has been selected, and there’s a first-time call-up for Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche. But there’s no place for Hugo Ekitike, despite his red-hot form — the striker has scored in each of his first three games for Liverpool and netted 22 times for Eintracht Frankfurt last season. He is still waiting for his senior international debut.
Tough on Ekitike, but Liverpool might benefit
Although French media reports had hinted that Ekitike could miss out due to the intense competition for attacking spots, his exclusion is still a surprise. Especially so after receiving high praise from none other than Thierry Henry, who called him “outstanding” following his goal against Newcastle — his third in as many matches for the Reds.
Interestingly, while Ekitike is overlooked despite his strong form, Konate is included despite a tough start to the season that has drawn criticism from pundits. Deschamps’ continued trust in the centre-back could be the boost he needs heading into the Arsenal game.
As for Ekitike, his omission may fuel his determination to prove the national team boss wrong. And while it may seem harsh, Liverpool fans will be glad to see their in-form number 22 get a rest — avoiding the physical risks that come with international duty.
