Newcastle Supporters Outraged by Arne Slot’s Post-Match Remarks Following Liverpool’s Dramatic Win
Newcastle United fans have reacted angrily to Arne Slot’s comments after Liverpool clinched a last-gasp 3-2 victory at St James’ Park on Monday night, courtesy of a 100th-minute winner. Despite playing with 10 men following Anthony Gordon’s first-half red card, the Magpies were largely the better side but failed to capitalise on their chances. Liverpool substitute Rio Ngumoha ultimately delivered a crushing blow, sealing the win late in stoppage time.
Although Newcastle came away with nothing, their performance drew praise from pundits such as Jamie Carragher, who suggested the better team had lost. However, Liverpool manager Arne Slot offered a contrasting and controversial opinion that sparked backlash from Newcastle fans.
Slot’s Remarks Ignite Backlash
During a post-match interview with Sky Sports, presenter Dave Jones remarked that the match was among the most entertaining in recent memory. Slot, however, disagreed, suggesting the game lacked real footballing quality—implying Newcastle’s approach relied heavily on set-pieces and long balls.
This isn’t the first time Newcastle’s tactical style under Eddie Howe has come under fire, with Mikel Arteta also voicing similar concerns in the past. Slot appeared to reinforce that criticism, stating:
> “I think I heard you say ‘football match.’ I’m not sure that’s what I saw today. It was just one set-piece after another, long throws—it didn’t involve much tactical play. But I was pleased with how we stayed strong, especially during a difficult opening period. His insinuation that Newcastle played overly direct and lacked tactical sophistication—despite being down to 10 men—struck a nerve with the fanbase.
Online, many Newcastle supporters blasted Slot’s comments as disrespectful and dismissive. One fan posted: “Really poor from Slot. Playing direct football isn’t a crime if it gives you the best chance of winning. Why should Newcastle change their style to please him? If he can’t handle it, that’s on him.”
