With the transfer window set to close in just a few days, Alexander Isak has made it clear that he wants to join Liverpool. Representatives from Newcastle reportedly met with Isak at his home, and ahead of Newcastle’s upcoming match against Liverpool, he also spoke with a delegation from the Public Investment Fund and club co-owner Jamie Reuben about his future at St James’ Park.
Earlier this month, Newcastle turned down a £110 million bid from Premier League champions Liverpool for Isak, a decision that reportedly frustrated the striker.
The 25-year-old later issued a statement accusing Newcastle of going back on their word regarding a potential transfer to Anfield.
“Promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time,” Isak said. “To now act as if these issues are only just arising is misleading. Once trust is broken and promises are not kept, the relationship can’t continue.”
Now, just a week later, Isak has reiterated his wish to leave Newcastle before the transfer window closes and is still intent on moving to Liverpool.
According to The Telegraph, Isak is reportedly determined to force a move and is willing to stay on strike to make it happen. He has already missed games against Aston Villa and Liverpool.
Liverpool, for their part, are said to be considering a second offer but are waiting for signs from the Newcastle board before proceeding. The report also claims Liverpool will not match Newcastle’s £150 million valuation if there’s no indication a deal can be done.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have rejected Isak’s claims about broken promises. In response to his statement, the club expressed disappointment and said no official ever promised the striker he could leave this summer.
“Alex remains under contract, and we’ve been clear that no agreement was made allowing him to depart,” a Newcastle statement said.
They added that while the club values its players’ opinions, it must act in the best interests of the team, the club, and its supporters. So far, the conditions for a sale this summer have not been met, and the club doesn’t expect them to be.
“We are a proud football club with a strong sense of tradition and family,” the statement concluded. “Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
