Liverpool supporters are urging a key first-team player to leave the club before the transfer window closes, despite their thrilling 3-2 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park.
Four days shy of his 17th birthday, Rio Ngumoha scored a brilliant winning goal for Arne Slot’s side against a Newcastle team reduced to 10 men.
Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike both found the net for Liverpool in the first half, helping maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season—albeit from just two games— in an intense match.
Anthony Gordon was sent off for Newcastle in the first half, yet the Magpies kept fighting, with Bruno Guimaraes scoring in the 58th minute to narrow the gap.
Later, in the 88th minute, substitute William Osula equalized, scoring only his second Premier League goal for the club.
However, Ngumoha sealed the game with the final goal, in what will be remembered as one of the most exciting Premier League matches in recent times.
Despite being a man down, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle had been the stronger side for most of the match but ended up on the losing side.
While the win was what mattered most for Liverpool, fans were vocally critical of one player during the game.
Ibrahima Konate, now in the final year of his Anfield contract, struggled again after a tough opening day against Bournemouth, particularly against the Magpies.
The French defender was outmuscled by Dan Burn before Newcastle’s equalizer and made a costly error early in the game.
With strong links to Real Madrid and Liverpool’s interest in Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, supporters believe now is the moment for Konate to follow Trent Alexander-Arnold to the Bernabeu.
One fan commented at halftime: “Konate is mentally in Madrid. Dire for much of the half. Get Guehi in ASAP.”
Another said: “Guehi would easily replace Konate. Not sure what’s going on with him. Pay that extra £5m tonight.”
A third added: “Konate looks completely checked out. Sign Guehi this week to start and make him a backup.”
