Fans were united in frustration during the Newcastle vs Liverpool match on Monday evening.
Before the Premier League clash between Newcastle and Liverpool, the main topic of discussion was Alexander Isak’s situation.
As many are aware, Liverpool has been interested in signing Isak throughout the summer transfer window.
Earlier in August, Liverpool made a bid of £110 million plus add-ons for the Swedish forward, which Newcastle rejected. Despite this, the Premier League champions remain keen as the transfer deadline on September 1st approaches.
Newcastle reportedly want at least £150 million for Isak before considering a sale to Liverpool.
Before the match, former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry shared his opinion on Sky Sports after Isak was once again left out of Eddie Howe’s squad.
Henry said, “At some point, you can’t put yourself in a position where you skip training.”
However, despite all the talk surrounding Isak, fans on social media quickly shifted their focus to the referee’s performance, with many criticizing Simon Hooper for disrupting the flow of what was an intense game on Tyneside.
One fan commented, “The referee is having a hard time handling this Newcastle vs Liverpool match. He’s blowing the whistle too often and ruining the game.”
Another added, “The ref is spoiling the game. This is the match of the week, and he keeps stopping play at every chance. PGMOL should be held accountable; it ruins the spectacle every week.”
A third wrote, “The referee destroyed any expectations for this game by calling fouls on everything. Worst ref to assign to a game like this.”
All eyes were on Hooper just before halftime when Anthony Gordon’s poorly timed tackle on Virgil van Dijk was initially given a yellow card. After consulting the VAR monitor, the referee upgraded it to a red card, reducing Newcastle to ten men.
